How accurate are first impressions?

First impressions are often wildly wrong. I can think of at least 3 people who I had a bad first impression of who turned out to be some of the most important, admirable and inspirational people in my life. If you have someone who has made a bad first impression on you, even if weeks and weeks have passed, your feelings definitely still have the potential to change.

Try and see this person in a range of different contexts. If you’re in a group scenario with them, see what they’re like one on one.

If you know them quite well at work and the opportunity comes up, see how they behave towards people outside of that setting, as well as how they talk about people outside work, like close friends and family.

If they’re in your family, say something nice about them and see if anyone else joins in. They may give you new information that makes you see them in a more positive light.

If you can only see them in one environment, remember, it may only be in that context that you don’t like them.

Anyway, hopefully you can relate.
